Head Teacher: Job status is: PASSIVE

JOB DESCRIPTION: Interested in moving into
management or administration as well as teaching? The Head Teacher
will teach classes the same as regular full time staff,
but they will also have additional responsibilities to support both the
FS management and the teaching staff. These additional responsibilities
include:
I. Scheduling and Informing Teachers of New Classes
- Inform teachers of new classes in a timely fashion telling them as much about the class
as possible.
- Ascertain student levels, numbers, needs, course starting and finishing dates, and customers'
special requests and relay to teachers.
- Oversee teacher choice to insure the teacher is right for the group.
- Assign appropriate teachers for groups with special needs informing the teachers why
they have been assigned (e.g. students want a teacher with a good knowledge of grammar, music,
literature, engineering etc.) Provide advance warning and assistance to teachers about
schedule changes and new classes so they are prepared when the class actually does start.
- Follow up making sure that teachers prepare syllabuses suitable for
the class levels, needs and requirements (where they have been articulated).
If the chosen teachers do not have enough experience to prepare a syllabus
assign more experienced teachers to support and advise the teacher who
has to prepare the syllabus. When a less experienced teacher is given
a new class which leaves the choice of the textbook up to the teacher,
recommend appropriate text and teacher's guide and periodically check
in with new teacher to make sure everything is going O.K. (This
can be just a simple question like, "How is the Business Ventures
book I recommended working out in the new Yamaha class?")
- Assign teams of teachers to work together on intensives and have them prepare a syllabus
and materials by specific dates in advance of the start of the course. Check in with them
to see if they are on track with the syllabus, course goals, and progress and final
reports.
- Try to insure a reasonable balance of morning and evening classes. That is, that
teachers who have early morning classes don't get late classes the evening before.
(However, if a teacher has, say, five early morning J.H.S. a year we cannot necessarily
guarantee that he/she will not get a late class the evening before).
II. New Teacher Orientation
Orient and set up training/orientation schedules for incoming teachers.
Assign other teachers to help orient and train new teachers (buddy system).
III. Meetings
Assign teachers on a rotating basis to chair the bimonthly faculty
meetings.
IV. Update Manual
Update and revise manual and school forms as needed.
V. Liaison
Work with the FS management if a new teacher is needed when the
schedule gets too busy.
VI. Academic Advice
Advise teachers on appropriate materials, and mentor
teachers with pedagogical issues. Return to
